ICYMI: Bachmann Key Aide’s Statement on Sen. Kent Sorenson Defection

ANKENY, Iowa – U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s Iowa political director Wes Enos recently made enlightening comments concerning Iowa State Sen. Kent Sorenson’s defection to the Ron Paul camp from his position as Iowa Chairman for the Minnesota congresswoman’s campaign for the presidency.

Hours ago, Sen. Sorenson resigned from his post with the Bachmann camp and publicly endorsed Ron Paul for the presidency, committing to get out the vote for the 12-term Congressman from Texas in the pivotal first-in-nation voting contest.

Mr. Enos made his comments in response to unfounded allegations that Sen. Sorenson’s defection was made due to financial incentives made by the Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign.  Mr. Enos’s comments on the matter follow, and are presented in full:

“I won’t say much about the situation or the conflicting statements beyond this; I can say unequivocally that Kent Sorenson’s decision was, in no way financially motivated.  His decision had more to do with the fact that the Ron Paul supporters have been something of a family to him since he was first elected in 2008 and here in the end, as it becomes more and more apparent that the caucus cycle is coming to an end, Kent believed that he needed to be with them as they stand on the cusp of a potential caucus upset.  While I personally disagree with Kent’s decision, and plan to stay with Michele Bachmann because I truly believe in her, I cannot, in good conscious watch a good man like Kent Sorenson be attacked as a ‘sell-out’ ….That is simply not the case, and it was not the basis of his decision,” said Mr. Enos.

New Iowa Public Policy Poll Shows Paul Leads in Iowa

PPP | Newt Gingrich’s campaign is rapidly imploding, and Ron Paul has now taken the lead in Iowa. He’s at 23% to 20% for Mitt Romney, 14% for Gingrich, 10% each for Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Perry, 4% for Jon Huntsman, and 2% for Gary Johnson.

 

Gingrich has now seen a big drop in his Iowa standing two weeks in a row. His share of the vote has gone from 27% to 22% to 14%. And there’s been a large drop in his personal favorability numbers as well from +31 (62/31) to +12 (52/40) to now -1 (46/47). Negative ads over the last few weeks have really chipped away at Gingrich’s image as being a strong conservative- now only 36% of voters believe that he has ‘strong principles,’ while 43% think he does not.

 

Paul’s ascendancy is a sign that perhaps campaigns do matter at least a little, in a year where there has been a lot of discussion about whether they still do in Iowa. 22% of voters think he’s run the best campaign in the state compared to only 8% for Gingrich and 5% for Romney. The only other candidate to hit double digits on that question is Bachmann at 19%. Paul also leads Romney 26-5 (with Gingrich at 13%) with the 22% of voters who say it’s ‘very important’ that a candidate spends a lot of time in Iowa. Finally Paul leads Romney 29-19 among the 26% of likely voters who have seen one of the candidates in person.

In Case You Missed It: Michele Bachmann’s (Really) Tough Week

ANKENY, Iowa – Campaigning for our nation’s highest office is difficult, and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) is experiencing a really tough week that isn’t even over yet.

 

On Tuesday, Bachmann’s Iowa campaign chairman Tweeted an under-140-character mini-gaffe, writing that there were moving trucks outside pizza baron Herman Cain’s Iowa headquarters, assumedly for a quick exodus from the first-in-nation voting state.  The offending Tweet even included a photo of the trucks.  The trouble is, the trucks were delivering thousands of campaign signs, requiring Bachmann’s Iowa campaign manager to apologize.

 

On Wednesday while in Iowa, Bachmann told supporters that if elected President she would close the U.S. Embassy in Iran as a gesture of her firm stance against the nation.  The only problem is, the U.S. hasn’t had an embassy in Iran since 1980, the year when Blondie’s hit single “Call Me” filled the airwaves, Mt. St. Helens erupted, and Ted Turner launched CNN.

 

Also Wednesday, Bachmann floated some names of those who might have the high honor of serving as her Vice President, should she be elected.  Names include such stalwarts as her strategic competitor Rick Santorum, and U.S. Senators Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Marco Rubio (R-FL).  The list also includes real estate developer and reality TV host Donald Trump.  Uh-oh.  Is this the same Donald Trump that left the Republican Party of Iowa holding the bag by backing out of the party’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner?

 

On Thursday, Bachmann’s name came up yet again.  This time it was for pilfering a list of homeschool family emails from the well-regarded Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators (NICHE), and using that list to send two communiques to this “niche” market.  The misuse of the email list was traced to a NICHE board member who is a paid Bachmann staffer, necessitating a multi-pronged email response to members from NICHE President Justin LaVan.  The email included the requisite apology to members, an assurance of corrective measures, and an interesting list of FEC compliance actions including giving other campaigns an equal opportunity to use this listserv for the same purpose.

 

Lastly, again on Thursday, Bachmann made what smaller and newer publicly traded business owners might call a fatal error in missing a key vote on the House Financial Services Committee.  Congressman Paul adjusted his New Hampshire campaign schedule to vote for a SarbOx compliance exemption for businesses of this kind.  Yet, Bachmann missed the committee vote and therefore she delayed a step toward regulatory relief for businesses already burdened with the kind of overregulation that prevents hiring, even during these trying economic times.

 

“Campaigning for the presidency is challenging and this fact is one of the reasons why my admiration for Ron Paul grows with every stop along the campaign trail.  On behalf of the whole Iowa campaign team, I’d like to wish Rep. Bachmann a future schedule free of hiccups,” said Ron Paul 2012 Iowa Chairman Drew Ivers.

Ron Paul Wins NFRA Des Moines Straw Poll

GOP presidential candidate U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) ran away with the National Federation of Republican Assemblies Straw Poll on Saturday in Des Moines, garnering 82 percent of the vote among Iowans.

 

Businessman Herman Cain came in second with 14 percent. Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann and Texas Gov. Rick Perry each got 1 percent or less. Former Utah Gov. Jon Hunstman and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney received no votes.

Ron Paul Wins California State GOP Convention Straw Poll

Paul bests nearest competition by 15 percent

LAKE JACKSON, Texas– At today’s California state Republican fall convention, 2012 Presidential candidate Ron Paul won its presidential straw poll, picking up 45 percent of the ballots cast.

“This win is just the latest indication of our campaign’s growing momentum,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton. “Americans are sick and tired of the status quo and Dr. Paul offers a real change, and hope for a free and prosperous future.”

The convention and poll were held at the JW Marriot in downtown Los Angeles. Out of 833 ballots cast, Paul garnered the greatest number of votes with 374, beating his nearest competitor Texas Gov. Rick Perry by a wide margin. See below for breakdown of votes and percentages.

Rick Perry Wins Pacific County Straw Poll; Don’t Get Excited

Many of Texas Governor Rick Perry’s supporters are absolutely ecstatic that Perry was the decisive victor in the 2011 Pacific County GOP straw poll.  Pacific County is located in the southern part of the state of Washington.  Perry garnered a whopping 43% of the overall vote, with Ron Paul coming in a distant second place with 17% of the vote.  Perry, a newcomer to the race for the GOP presidential candidacy nomination, has been stirring up the political scene with many observers calling him “George W. Bush on steroids.”

Many of Perry’s most ardent supporters, many of whom are also vehement enemies of Ron Paul and his supporters (whom they endearingly refer to as “Paulbots”), have been gloating at Paul’s supporters that he came in so distantly behind Perry in this straw poll.  The fact which they conveniently overlook is that ONLY ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-SEVEN (127) PEOPLE voted in the Pacific County Straw Poll.[1]  That being a whopping fifty-five people voting for Perry as opposed to the 4,621 people who voted for Ron Paul in the Ames, Iowa Straw Poll.

“So what!” is what some might say.  “Rick Perry wasn’t even on the ballot for the Ames Straw Poll!”  That is true, however, the day of the Ames poll was the day that Perry FORMALLY (not for the first time, but formally) announced his candidacy for the GOP nomination, and his supporters did indeed vote for him.  718 of Perry’s supporters voted for him as a write-in candidate.[2]  Even though he wasn’t on the ballot, he certainly was voted for.  Meanwhile Ron Paul, who (unlike Perry) has always held the same philosophies and principles in politics, brought in over six times the number of votes Perry did in Ames.  This alone would be fairly reasonable weight to negate the so-called victory in Pacific County.  Oh and by the way, many of Perry’s supporters have referred to the Pacific County Straw Poll simply as the Pacific Straw Poll, as if to make it seem like this straw poll included Republicans from all over the Pacific coast.  Nice try!

“Who cares?!” many Perry supporters (or anti-Paul Republicans) might say.  “Paul still lost to Michele Bachmann in Ames!”  This is true.  However, there are elements of the Ames Straw Poll which are seen, and other elements which are not seen (shoutout to Bastiat!).  What is seen is how Bachmann NARROWLY defeated Paul by 152 votes.  What is not seen is that, while Paul was simply campaigning for votes in Ames, Bachmann bought her votes by having a petting zoo and handing out free tickets to a Randy Travis celebrity country music concert, making people vote for her before accessing these perks (bribes).[3][4]  It is known that 4,000 of her 4,823 votes were BOUGHT.[5]  Ron Paul, who finished with 4,621 votes managed to garner this support without a petting zoo, a country music concert, or handing out thousands of free tickets.  Therefore, it’s safe to say that Paul is a top-tier Republican candidate, no matter how badly Fox News hates it.

So not only did Paul actually earn his votes in Ames (unlike Bachmann), but he also received over six times the amount of votes as Perry.  As proud as his supporters might be over his whopping fifty-five votes in Pacific County, he is not the leading GOP candidate—Ron Paul is.  Perry supporters can try to cite this as a false victory over Perry since Perry wasn’t officially on the ballot (and that theoretically would have cost him votes), but in all honesty, all people know that the people who were ready to vote for Perry did so, and the people who were ready to vote for Ron Paul did so as well.

Congratulations to Candidate Perry and his supporters for their victory in Pacific County, Washington.  Just remember, though, that their miniscule victory in a county-wide straw poll means nothing next to Ron Paul’s great and honest victory over Perry in Ames.

Ron Paul Unelectable?

In February, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly was incredibly critical of Congressman Ron Paul’s ability to win.[1]  He mentioned briefly how Donald Trump was booed at the CPAC 2011 meeting by the crowd, as O’Reilly says, “because of Ron Paul.”  What O’Reilly failed to mention in that creatively worded statement is how the audience at CPAC was overwhelmingly favorable towards Ron Paul and highly disagreed with The Donald’s arrogant statement that Ron Paul cannot be elected.  Paul, after all, won the CPAC straw poll for the best possible Republican Presidential Candidate.  O’Reilly also compared Congressman Paul to a number of nearly nameless third party candidates who were unable to garnish massive support in the past, Ralph Nader being one of them.

John Stossel, educated not only in the arena of politics but also in economics, spoke in favor of Congressman Paul.  The interesting thing about O’Reilly’s statements is that they seemed to flip-flop between undermining Congressman Paul’s ability to win and then calling upon him to run because he’s an interesting candidate and will be able to challenge the front runners, whom O’Reilly had already decided were Bachmann, Romney, and Perry.  What O’Reilly apparently didn’t seem to consider was the possibility that not only would Paul be able to challenge the O’Reilly-crowned “front runners” but also stump them while they merely pay lip service to the Constitution and actually present himself to the American people as a better candidate.

O’Reilly’s main problem with Ron Paul is that he’s “too radical” and “isolationist.”  He seems to be unaware that Paul’s foreign policy is based on the Constitution and the guidance of the Founding Fathers.  If a foreign policy based on the Constitution and the guidance of the national founders is considered to be too radical for America, then America has obviously lost its way and needs to turn around and retrace her steps.

In his 2008 book The Revolution, Congressman Paul quotes several early statesmen at length, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Henry Clay who were overwhelmingly in favor of avoiding foreign entanglements, to defend his Constitutional foreign policy.  He even quotes at length the non-interventionist platform that George W. Bush ran on and was elected on in 2000 and eventually betrayed.

This idea was popular when George W. Bush ran on it, but eleven years later it’s all of a sudden too radical.  Ron Paul is not a radical for seeking a policy of noninterventionism.  He says:

“I myself have never been an isolationist.  I favor the very opposite of isolation: diplomacy, free trade, and freedom of travel.  The real isolationists are those who impose sanctions and embargoes on countries and peoples across the globe because they disagree with the internal and foreign policies of their leaders.  The real isolationists are those who choose to use force overseas to promote democracy, rather than seeking change through diplomacy, engagement, and by setting a positive example.  The real isolationists are those who isolate their country in the court of world opinion by pursuing needless belligerence and war that have nothing to do with legitimate national security concerns.”[2]

O’Reilly was even willing to make a bet against Stossel, the stakes being $1,000 for wounded warriors, that Congressman Paul won’t win a single primary election in 2012.  Many anti-Paul Republicans today, as in February, love to [falsely] cite Paul’s alleged un-electability.  When they do so, they ignore the fact that he is the leading candidate.  While on Monday a USA Today Gallup Poll showed Ron Paul in third place, a telephone survey of Iowa’s likely caucus participants revealed:

“Overall, just 28% of potential Iowa Caucus participants are absolutely certain of how they will vote, while the rest could change their mind. Among those who are certain of their vote, Ron Paul is on top at 27%.”[3]

The article on Info Wars making the above quotation also stated that “With this kind of showing, Ron Paul’s candidacy can no longer be accurately characterized as a long shot.”

Following yesterday’s (August 11) debate in Iowa, Congressman Paul overwhelmingly won the Iowa Online Straw Poll, claiming 44% of the overall vote and leaving the other seven candidates to divide the remaining 56%.  The distant second in that poll was Herman Cain with 16%.[4]

Even Fox News, many of whose anchors have been falsely and dishonestly proclaiming Romney as the frontrunner, admits that Ron Paul won the debate, receiving over 20,000 of the total 36,000 votes (Gingrich came in second place with 5,000~).[5]  Another Fox News online poll, at the time of this writing, confirmed Paul as the winner with over 14,000 of 37,000 total votes, raking in 38% of the total vote.[6]

MSNBC’s online poll, riddled with user comments bashing the Republican Party, showed Ron Paul leading with nearly 11,000 (36%) of the total 29,500 votes.  The category with the second most votes (23%) was “no clear winner.[7]  The Red Dog Report showed Ron Paul pulling in 78% of total votes, with Gingrich at a distant second with 7%.[8]  In the last Republican debate in June, Ron Paul won all three Fox News online polls as well as CNN’s poll (83%).[9]

Clearly Ron Paul is not such a radical after all if he is receiving such massive support from both within and without the Republican Party.  As much as O’Reilly may lack faith in him, Congressman Ron Paul is not unelectable.  He is clearly the people’s choice for the most qualified candidate to run against President Obama in 2012, and he will do so on a platform whose solid foundation is the Constitution, and his guiding lights will be his faith in God and the written guidance of the Founding Fathers and great statesmen throughout the ages.
