When, in the 1950s, Nikita Khrushchev said, "We will bury you," and, "Your children will live under communism," Eisenhower's America scoffed.

By 1980, however, the tide did indeed seem to be with the East.

America had suffered a decade of defeats. Southeast Asia had fallen. The ayatollah had seized power in Iran. Moscow had occupied Afghanistan. Cuban troops were in Ethiopia and Angola. Grenada and Nicaragua had fallen to the Soviet bloc. Eurocommunism was all the rage on the continent.

Just a decade later, the world turned upside-down.

The Berlin Wall fell. Eastern Europe was suddenly free. The Soviet Union disintegrated. China abandoned Maoism for state capitalism.

Now, 20 years on, the wheel has turned again -- toward darkness. No longer do we hear chatter about "The End of History" and triumph of democratic capitalism, of America imposing her "global hegemony" or leading mankind into "a second American century."

The hubris is gone, and triumphalism has given way to anxiety, apprehension, alarm.

In an essay, "The Return of Toxic Nationalism," Robert Kaplan, a geopolitical analyst for Stratfor, writes that Western elites are even yet failing to see the larger, darker picture of our evolving world.

20 Ways America Has Begun to Reap What It Has Sown

1) Our Congress passes bills that run into the thousands of pages; then we're surprised that the bills are full of loopholes, set asides for lobbyists and toxic clauses no one seemed to know about.

2) We've replaced telling the difference between right and wrong with legalisms; then we're surprised that people are always looking for loopholes and technicalities to get out of fulfilling their obligations.

3) Feminists denigrate men, tell them to behave more like women and are offended by chivalry; then they're surprised to find that our society has been inundated by passive, wimpy beta males.

4) Congress hasn't produced a budget in more than 3 years, most of the big bills don't go through the normal committee process, and parliamentary maneuvers are used to block debate and keep Republicans from offering amendments to bills; then we're surprised when we have gridlock, filibusters and massive fights over the debt limit.

5) We allow politicians to work as highly paid lobbyists after they leave Congress; then we're surprised when they give favorable treatment to companies they hope will make them wealthy after they leave Congress.

Ron Paul Campaign Statement on Morning Media Incident

CONCORD, N.H. – Jesse Benton, national campaign chairman for the Ron Paul campaign, released the following statement today in regards to the media incident in Manchester, NH this morning:

 

“Dr. Paul has been committed to meeting one on one with New Hampshire voters, and has aggressively campaigned at town halls, house parties, and meet and greets since early last spring.

 

“This morning, he attempted to hold an event at Moe Joe’s Diner in Manchester, to speak with patrons and supporters in the last push before the New Hampshire primary. Unfortunately, Dr. Paul and his family were forced to leave early after over 120 members of the press created a mob-like atmosphere that was deemed to be unsafe for the candidate, Moe Joe’s customers, and reporters themselves.

 

“The campaign had planned to cover our normal degree of media interest, which is always ample. However, a significant increase in the press corps, largely driven by an influx of foreign journalists, exceeded all expectations.

 

“Mrs. Paul herself, attempting to campaign alongside her husband, was shoved aside by one reporter and told to “get out of the way.”

 

“While we are very welcoming of media coverage and grateful for the interest in Dr. Paul and his campaign, basic safety simply must come first. On behalf of Dr. Paul and his campaign team, I would like to apologize to customers at Moe Joe’s who may have been distressed by this incident, and extend our gratitude and apologies to the owners, who were kind enough to have us.

 

“We ask the press, at all upcoming events over the next day and a half, to be respectful of both Dr. Paul and of New Hampshire voters, who are entitled to examine their candidates in a safe and responsible atmosphere.”

Yesterday President Obama participated in the first ever Twitter Town Hall at the White House. He answered a variety of questions from across America, many relating the economy, jobs, and ideas for reducing the deficit.
