Sen. Rand Paul to fuel presidential speculation by meeting with Israeli leaders

Most senators trigger speculation about a possible presidential campaign by scheduling visits to Iowa or New Hampshire. Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul is attracting questions about his 2016 intentions by traveling to Israel this week.

Paul is scheduled to meet Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres, the Jerusalem Post reported Thursday. The meetings coincide with the senator’s 50th birthday.

Paul is also expected to travel to Jordan on Tuesday to meet with King Abdullah and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. While in his Israel, he will address the Jerusalem Institute for Market Studies on fiscal policy and foreign aid.

The trip comes as GOP Senate leaders have assigned Paul to serve on the Foreign Relations Committee. While the tea party senator is best known for his strong fiscal conservatism and a desire for cuts in the federal budget, he has occasionally bucked the GOP line on foreign policy.

The Communist Party USA (CPUSA) deplores the rapid escalation of tensions between Iran on the one hand, and Israel, the United States and the United Kingdom on the other. This escalation represents a threat to world peace; as various irresponsible parties, such as Republican politicians in the United States and various persons in the Israeli government, talk more and more openly of acts like strikes on Iranian facilities, which would certainly be acts of war. Assassinations of Iranian scientists on the streets of their own country are further provocations.

The current Iranian regime has repressed the working class and the left, including our fraternal party, the Tudeh, and has increasingly turned to the same neo-liberal economic policies which have caused suffering to people around the world. However, external intervention and provocations by Israeli, U.S., British and other governments in no way help the Iranian people.
 
Indeed, progressives in Iran, while criticizing their own government, have explicitly opposed such outside intervention, including the kind of sanctions that are now being pushed by the United States and its allies, as hurting the Iranian people while playing into the hands of the regime. Further, an accident or irresponsible move by either side could set off a military confrontation which would have a strong impact on the world economy and especially on the poorer countries that rely highly on Iranian oil for their own survival.
 
Iran is much larger than Iraq and much more developed than Afghanistan, and for the United States to get into a war with Iran could have disastrous consequences for all of us. To allow this to happen would be outrageous.
 
There are all sorts of games and intrigues going on which shape the current crisis.  Iranian President Ahmadinejad is under attack by other reactionary elements in his own country, as legislative elections approach.  The Israeli government is under sharp criticism from many of its citizens because of failed economic policies that have widened the gap between rich and poor. There is a bitter feud going on between Iran and Saudi Arabia.  And of course we have our own election campaigns, with the usual push by the Republicans to portray the Obama administration as "soft" on the country's enemies.
 
All of these dynamics heighten the danger of a drift toward war.

The Communist Party USA calls for an end to the intrigues and provocations coming out of the Israeli, British and US governments and political factions. We denounce the push for armed strikes against Iran by Israel, which is the only nuclear-armed state in the region and the killings of Iranian scientists as criminal acts of terrorism.
 
We reiterate that only the Iranian people have the right to decide what sort of government their country will have, and we oppose activities by outside parties aimed at “regime change”.  We call for continued negotiations as the only viable way to relieve tensions in the Gulf region.

-RON PAUL served his country.  Romney did not.

-RON PAUL predicted the recession and opposed TARP.  Romney supported TARP bailouts.

-RON PAUL as a doctor delivered 4000 babies and was always pro-life. Romney supported Roe v. Wade for YEARS before deciding that opposing it was more popular among Republicans.

-RON PAUL gets the majority of contributions from working moms and dads and ACTIVE MILITARY members. Romney gets the majority of his contributions from WALL STREET.

-RON PAUL will NOT provide incentives for illegal immigration.  For years, Romney was in favor of path-to-citizenship programs for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. before figuring out Republicans don’t like that…

-As a doctor, RON PAUL rejected MediCare payments and simply treated the poor for free, as a voluntary act of kindness. Romney favors individual mandates.

-RON PAUL voted against ObamaCare.  Romney designed it.

-RON PAUL has preached the SAME message of sound money, Constitutional government, and freedom for DECADES.  Some of Romney's many flip flops are documented on video at WhichMitt.com, and for a full day's reading, one need only Google search "Romney flip flops."

-RON PAUL’s views on national defense were praised by Ronald Reagan.  Romney’s were not.

Israeli Intelligence Agrees with Ron Paul on Potential Nuclear Iran

The head of Israel’s intelligence agency says that a nuclear-armed Iran does not necessarily pose an existential threat to the Jewish state, according to Israeli ambassadors.

Mossad chief Tamir Pardo addressed a conclave of Israeli ambassadors in Jerusalem on Thursday, saying that Israel’s existence is not inevitably endangered by Iran acquiring an atomic weapon, even as Israel has tried to disrupt Iran’s nuclear program.

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul recently discussed his position on the State of Israel and foreign policy in general.

 

In a video interview published online, conducted by Ron Paul 2012 campaign blogger Jack Hunter, the 12-term Congressman from Texas describes how he was one of few congressmen to oppose rebuking Israel for a strike on Iraq’s nuclear program in the 1980s.

 

States Paul in the interview: “To me it was Israel’s business, so I was voting for their independence. I think Israel should be treated as an independent nation and not a puppet of our state.”

 

Paul went on to talk about his opposition to giving foreign aid to Israel’s sworn enemies, and how Israel should be treated as our best friend not one we dictate policy to.

DNC Chair Condemns Mitt Romney for Associations with Fundraiser with Ties to Palestinian Terrorists

Following the news that Patrick Cave, a fundraiser for Mitt Romney, has served as a lobbyist for the Arab Bank which was investigated by the Treasury Department for funneling money to Palestinian terrorists, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:

 

“I am deeply disturbed to hear that Mitt Romney’s re-election bid is in part being bankrolled by a man who just a few years ago lobbied for a client that was under federal investigation for funding Palestinian terrorists. As recently as 2008, Patrick Cave was working for the Arab Bank, which has faced lawsuits from the families of victims who lost their lives to attacks by Palestinian suicide bombers.

 

“It is unconscionable that Mitt Romney is even associating with Cave, let alone using him as a key fundraiser for his presidential campaign. Mitt Romney cannot talk about being a supporter of Israel on the one hand, while taking money on the other from someone who has a known association with terrorists whose goal is to do Israel harm.

 

“I call on Mitt Romney to immediately cut ties with Patrick Cave and return any campaign donations he has received from Cave or through his fundraising efforts.”

This is a very special day in the United States, and I hope the traditions we celebrate here today will soon spread throughout the world.  The very first Thanksgiving in North America was a day when two clashing civilizations were able to set aside their differences as one helped the other not to starve, and they sat together as brothers and gave thanks to the Almighty.

 

Today, I have many reasons to give thanks to God, though Thanksgiving Day is by no means the only day I’m truly thankful.  I have a strong faith in God, a wonderful family, loyal friends, a comfortable job, and even further, I’ve been given the privilege of I living free in an exceptional Constitutional republic, of serving my state and country as a reservist, and to attend an excellent university.  I see the Almighty working in the world every day, guiding us all to make improvements in our lives and the way we get along with others.

 

I’m also incredibly thankful and fortunate for everyone reading this message.  It’s the readers of the Political Spectrum as well as the other Political Spectrum Publishing blogs that make this venture so worth it!  Every day hundreds of people stop by to get the latest news and commentary on the political and economic arenas, and among all the mainstream media and junk media available, I’m glad that those readers came here.  Thank you all!

Because of the fact that the original thanks givers were able to set their differences aside like adults, despite radically differing faiths, cultures, languages, and systems of ethics, I have hope for the future of mankind.  I have hope that the Palestinian will soon be able to sit and dine with the Israeli, that the Shi’ite will be able to sit with the Sunni, the North Korean with the South Korean, the Christian with the Muslim, that angry and estranged brothers in the United States will forgive and embrace each other again, and that Almighty God will warm the hearts of human beings through knowledge and understanding.

DNC Chair Slams GOP Field, Including Mitt Romney, for Pledging to Zero Out Foreign Aid, Including for Israel

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz sharply challenged the Republican field this evening, including Mitt Romney, for pledging to zero out the foreign aid budget, including resources the U.S. provides to Israel to aid in its security.

 

“I’m aghast that the leading Republican contenders for President tonight, including Mitt Romney, pledged to zero out the foreign aid budget including the traditional and vital support the U.S. has provided the Jewish state of Israel for its security. I cannot think of a more irresponsible, risky or deplorable position towards our most important friend and ally. That Mitt Romney and these candidates would sacrifice the security of the state of Israel for an applause line at a debate and to appeal to the far right wing Tea Party faction of the Republican base, shows that not a single one of them has what it takes to be commander-in-chief.

 

“It is a moral and security imperative for the U.S. to aid in the security of the state of Israel and to defend it from those who would do it harm. Barack Obama understands that and has made Israel's security a priority; proposing and securing $3 billion in foreign aid to Israel; proposing and securing $205 million in funding for the Iron Dome missile defense system for Israel and authorizing the sale of bunker buster bombs previously denied by former President George W. Bush. The United States strongly condemns the dangerous and provocative attacks on a mosque in the northern Israeli town of Tuba-Zangariyye, which took place on October 3. Such hateful sectarian actions are never justified. We note that the Israeli Government also strongly condemned the attacks, and we endorse stepped-up efforts by law enforcement authorities to act vigorously to bring to justice those responsible for this heinous act and similar attacks that have taken place in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Authority's recent announcement that it would seek UN recognition as an independent state dominated the news and the political debate in the United States last week, though in truth it should mean very little to us. Only a political class harboring the illusion it can run the world obsesses over the aspirations of a tiny population on a tiny piece of land thousands of miles away.  Remember, the UN initiated this persistent conflict with its 1947 Partition Plan.

Unfortunately the debate is dominated by those who either support the Israeli side in the conflict, or those who support the Palestinian desire for statehood.  We rarely seem to hear the view of those who support the US side and US interests.  I am on that side.  I believe that we can no longer police the world. We can no longer bribe the Israelis and Palestinians to continue an endless "peace process" that goes nowhere. It is not in our interest to hector the Palestinians or the Israelis, or to "export" democracy to the region but reject it when people vote the "wrong" way.

I have reservations about the Palestinian drive for UN recognition. Personally I wish the United States would de-recognize the United Nations.  As most readers already know, in every Congress I introduce legislation to end our membership in that organization. The UN is a threat to our sovereignty-- and as we are the main source of its income, it is a threat to our economic well-being. Increasingly over the past several years, we see the United Nations providing political and legal cover for the military aspirations of interventionists rather than serving as an international forum to preserve peace. Neoconservatives in the US have grown to love the United Nations as they co-opt the organization under the guise of endless "reform."  Under the sovereignty-destroying doctrine of "Responsibility to Protect," adopted at the 2005 World Summit, the UN takes it upon itself to intervene in internal conflicts of its member states whenever it believes that human rights are being violated.  Thus under "Responsibility to Protect," the UN provides the green light for a kind of global no-knock raid on any sovereign country.

If asked, I would personally counsel the Palestinians to avoid the United Nations.  UN membership and participation is no guarantee that sovereignty will be respected.  We see what happens to UN members such as Iraq and Libya when those countries' leaders fall out of favor with US administrations: under US and allied pressure a fig leaf resolution is adopted in the UN to facilitate devastating military intervention.  When the UN gave NATO the green light to bomb Libya there was no genocide taking place.  It was a purely preventative war.  The result?  Thousands dead, a destroyed country, and extremely dubious new leaders.

While I do not see UN membership as a particularly productive move for the Palestinian leadership, I do not believe the US should use its position in the UN Security Council to block their membership.  I believe in self-determination of peoples and I recognize that peoples may wish to pursue statehood by different means.  As we saw after the Cold War, numerous new states were born out of the ruins of the USSR as the various old Soviet Republics decided that smaller states were preferable to an enormous and oppressive multi-national conglomerate.

The real, pro-US solution to the problems in the Middle East is for us to end all foreign aid, stop arming foreign countries, encourage peaceful diplomatic resolutions to conflicts, and disengage militarily.  In others words, follow Jefferson's admonition:  "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none."

SECRETARY CLINTON: I would like to say how pleased, relieved, and grateful I am that these two young men are finally out of an Iranian prison, where they never should have been in the first place. And I am not going to say any more because they have a chance now to reuinte with their families and to decompress from what has been a terrible experience for them. And I’m looking forward to seeing them when they return home.

QUESTION: Mr. Prime Minister, why won’t you freeze the settlements if that’s one way to get back to talks?

PRIME MINISTER NETANYAHU: Well, I did, as you know, and did something that no previous Israeli government did. I actually froze any construction for ten months, waited nine months and one week; the Palestinians finally came and said, well, keep on freezing. So I think wisely – and we concluded with the United States – that what we really have to do is get on with the real issues and get down and negotiate all these issues in order to get peace. We have to negotiate the issues to resolve them. We can’t just negotiate about the negotiations.

The Quartet is greatly concerned by Israel's recent announcements to advance planning for new housing units in Ariel and East Jerusalem, and reiterates its position in this regard, in particular its statement of March 12, 2010. The Quartet reaffirms that unilateral action by either party cannot prejudge the outcome of negotiations and will not be recognized by the international community. Jerusalem in particular is one of the core issues that must be resolved through negotiations between the parties, which underscores the urgent need for the parties to resume serious and substantive talks. This comes at a critical juncture with Quartet efforts ongoing to resume negotiations which are the only way to a just and durable solution to the conflict.

The Quartet is determined to pursue its efforts. Ultimately, it is up to Israeli and Palestinian leaders to make tough decisions and avoid actions by their governments that undermine the very goals they and we are trying to achieve.

Why is it that people from across the political spectrum so passionately seek to vilify Ron Paul?  Ronald Reagan—blindly loved as an icon by conservatives and ultraconservative the way Lenin is loved by ultra-leftists—has become somewhat of a guiding light for modern Republicans, who use his tenures as Governor and President, his speeches, and his writings as their beacon for forming policy.  President Reagan clearly appreciated Ron Paul’s contributions to the House of Representatives as well as his contributions to public policy.

Congressman Paul represents the basic pillars of conservatism: the practice of religion unhindered by government, family ties and the role of families in society, strong national defense, lower taxes, property rights, and sound money.  Furthermore, Congressman Paul’s voting record in Congress shows he is consistent in voting according to his values for which his constituency elected him.

One reason many conservatives distrust him and ultraconservatives openly hate him is his opposition to a global empire established through military force, coupled with his opposition to getting entangled in foreign affairs and especially foreign alliances.  He would see a quick end to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and an immediate end to the bombing campaigns in the Libyan Civil War and Yemeni Uprising (two undeclared wars which the GOP is smashing President Obama[1]).  What the ultraconservatives translate this into is an idea that he is completely against Israel.[2]  In reality, he isn’t against Israel, he is simply against giving huge amounts of aid and advice to a country that is often at war.  He has no double standards and would apply this principle to every other country the United States has dealings with.

But why is this such a bad thing?  If trillions of dollars were not being squandered as “gifts” for foreign assistance[3] (to countries most likely unable to properly manage that aid money or put it to good use), then the trillions or hundreds of billions could stay at home and substitute for the high taxes Americans are burdened with.  In regards to Israel, he knows that many militants who hate Israel also hate this country, as they perceive Israel to be a puppet state and the United States to be the puppet master.  This is a far cry from the truth, but it’s not completely irrational, since Israel goes out of its way to consult with the Executive Branch on many of its internal matters, especially in regards to dealing with terrorism from Hamas, Hezbollah, and the PLO, and even asks for monetary aid.[4]  Ron Paul knows that in order for Israel to be a free country, its population needs to be free to run its own country without “getting permission.”  Though he is sympathetic to the political plight of the Palestinians in having their own State, he knows that it’s not the U.S.’ job to be the world police.  If the U.S. were the designated mediator in Israel/Palestine, then it would only be right to also mediate in the various civil wars occurring in Africa and even Asia and Latin America.

Nonetheless, the pro-Israel-at-all-costs cult sees Congressman Paul as the Antichrist[5][6] trying to destroy Zion.[7]  This is a false portrayal, since Congressman Paul is a Christian and, unlike many Conservative “Christians” in the Congress, Ron Paul has actually lived up to the ideals of a Christian lifestyle through worshipping God, being absolutely faithful to his wife of over fifty years, providing for his family and teaching his children the importance of hard work, and those who know him can testify that he is true to his word.

Other ultraconservatives portray Ron Paul as being anti-military.[8]  This is also false; he spent over five years in the Air Force and Air National Guard and has repeatedly advocated having a strong military for the purpose of national DEFENSE—just the way the Founding Fathers wanted.  President Ronald Reagan even commended Congressman Paul for being an excellent advocate of national defense.[9]

When Paul says he wants to scale back the size of the military, he refers not to the amount of troops at Fort Hood, Fort Irwin, or Naval Base San Diego, but rather the amount of overseas personnel and installations overseas in over one hundred countries[10] (this does not count simple embassy garrisons).  He has repeatedly said that he was all in favor of finding Osama Bin Laden and destroying Al Qaeda, just not at the cost of invading other countries, toppling regimes, and spending thousands of lives and trillions of dollars on nation building.  This is not a farfetched vision of fighting terrorism…  After all, the CIA and Navy SEALs found Osama Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan (NOT Afghanistan) and took him out.  This victory was possible without American troops fighting insurgents or government troops in Islamabad.

After these analyses, the only logical answer to the question of why so many groups attack Ron Paul is that he fails to meet the criteria for a statist political party stuffed shirt whose existence is dedicated to satisfying special interests at the expense of the general coffers, the Constitution, and personal liberties.
