Andy Griffith and American Values

I was sad to hear today of Andy Griffith’s passing at the age of 86. Like many Americans, I grew up watching The Andy Griffith Show. Being from South Carolina and watching a show about the town of Mayberry, North Carolina, Griffith’s program was a heartwarming example of small town values I readily recognized, and also exemplary of much of America during that era. Sure it was television. But it had heart.

With today’s news, many Ron Paul supporters have been sharing a particular Andy Griffith Show scene in which Andy teaches his son Opie about the importance of the right to privacy and due process. Someone even titled this clip “Andy Griffith vs. The Patriot Act.” Do not take this to be a commentary on the personal politics of the late Mr. Griffith, but an example of how his program, much like The Cosby Show decades later, often reminded Americans of their most core values.

Ron Paul’s Message Is Resonating

South Carolina reflections by Revolution PAC Advisory Board member Dr. Murray Sabrin, finance professor at Ramapo College’s Anisfield School of Business and former New Jersey gubernatorial and senatorial candidate:

Despite finishing fourth in the South Carolina primary, Ron Paul was upbeat during his speech Saturday night, giving one of his finest presentations as a presidential candidate. Ron hit all the high notes about his campaign and reminded his supporters that the cause of liberty will not be won overnight; it is a multifaceted process.  Educating people about crony capitalism, the FED, the federal budget and entitlements, civil liberties, and our interventionist foreign policy so they will vote for the liberty presidential candidate may take more time than just this presidential campaign.

After only three contests, won by three different candidates, there is no clear front runner.   Ron Paul will remain in the race to win as many delegates to the 2012 GOP presidential convention in Tampa.  If Ron does not have enough delegates to win the nomination and neither does anyone else, my prediction a year ago will come true, a brokered convention.  With several hundred delegates, Ron could force many issues, including putting Rand Paul on the ticket as either the presidential nominee or VP nominee.  Wouldn’t that be juicy?

Romney’s Dodging on Taxes, Inability to Explain What He Did in Private Sector as a Corporate Raider Show Why he Fails to Resonate with the Middle Class

By DNC Press

Following last night’s Republican debate in South Carolina, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:

“If anyone in America needed additional evidence as to why Mitt Romney’s had such a bad week, why Americans’ unfavorable views of him have soared, and why he is failing to resonate with middle class Americans, they should have gotten all they needed and more tonight. In short, Mitt Romney doesn’t understand the needs of the middle class, doesn’t relate to typical American families, and would be a disaster for Americans trying to get ahead and achieve the American Dream.

“For anyone hoping to get a straight answer from Romney on whether or not he will finally come clean with the American people and run a transparent campaign, tonight was a disappointment. Romney ducked and dodged on whether or not he would agree to follow the precedent set by President Obama and previous presidential candidates by releasing his previous comprehensive federal income tax returns for multiple years. Even Romney’s father, George Romney, released twelve years of his tax returns when he ran for president. Mitt Romney, it seems, doesn’t want the American people to know more about the details of the roughly 15 percent rate he pays in taxes – a far lower rate than what is paid by the typical working family. And with news reports this week that Romney has millions of dollars invested in overseas accounts – tax havens like the Cayman Islands –it raises further questions about why Romney is dodging the issue altogether. So dissembling and disjointed was Mitt Romney’s response tonight that he was actually booed by the audience.

"If his dodges on taxes weren’t bad enough, Mitt Romney continued to refuse to come clean about what he was really doing in the private sector as a corporate buyout specialist. Mr. Romney offered yet another job creation figure – 120,000 – after failing to substantiate the ‘100,000’ and ‘thousands’ he’s used in just the past few weeks. Why is Mitt Romney having such a hard time describing his job creation record? Because it was the last thing on his mind when he was raiding companies, bankrupting them and laying off workers while reaping huge profits for himself and his investors. What was on his mind? Just as one of his former colleagues has said –Mitt Romney had one goal and one goal only – creating wealth. Period.

“Once again, when it comes to Mitt Romney, the facts just don’t add up. He thinks he can play by his own set of rules – Romney’s Rules – under which he doesn’t have to level with the American people, doesn’t have to release his tax returns and doesn’t have to be straight about his record. But the American people expect candidates to operate by the same set of rules as everyone else – and Romney’s failure to do so is clearly why he is having so much trouble resonating with typical American families.”

Ron Paul Wins Southern Republican Debate

CHARLESTON, SC | Republican hopefuls met in Charleston, South Carolina tonight for the most recent primary debate; as the debate progressed a clear winner rose above the rank-and-file Republican candidates. Ron Paul rocked the house with his consistent message of liberty, small government, and fiscal responsibility. Despite attempts by other candidates and CNN to marginalize him (when discussing abortion the audience had to boo in order to get John King to ask Paul about his position on the subject) Paul was able to articulate how, as president, he would focus on fixing the problems in government instead of treating the symptoms produced by runaway government spending and intervention.

Of note was Paul calling out Rick Santorum for his consistent support for increased government spending, hyper-sensitivity to criticism, and weak position on right to work. Romney continued to dodge the issue of his tax return and was characteristically weak on pro-life and his record of supporting universal healthcare. Gingrich was heavily criticized for his amnesty for illegal aliens, pro-life voting record, marital issues, and general record for increasing government size.

With this stellar debate performance two days before the South Carolina primary Paul again drew a clear distinction between himself and the failings of the other primary candidates. It is now up to the voters of South Carolina to cast their vote for liberty…or more of the same.

Ron Paul Raps Overseas Spending, Boondoggles

Insists billion dollar Baghdad embassy not national defense, reports Revolution PAC

NORTHBROOK, IL – January 17, 2012 – U.S. Rep. Ron Paul stood by his pro-America foreign policy Monday, insisting that the United States would experience greater national security with less overseas spending, notes Revolution PAC. Rep. Paul made his comments at the Fox News/Wall Street Journal Debate in South Carolina in response to a question regarding how his economic plan would impact the Palmetto State’s significant military workforce.

“Spending a billion dollars on an embassy in Baghdad bigger than the Vatican, you consider that defense spending. I consider that waste,” insisted Paul, to hearty audience applause.

“We have to have a strong national defense,” Paul continued, “but we don’t get strength by diluting ourselves with 900 bases in 130 countries … I’d probably have more bases at home.”

Paul’s “Plan to Restore America” would cut all foreign aid, end foreign wars, bring American troops home and cap defense spending at 1 percent growth annually.

“Just one presidential candidate is taking a critical look at military expenditures,” explains Revolution PAC Chair Gary Franchi. “True fiscal conservatives increasingly recognize the wisdom in more responsibly allocating our human and financial resources and are rallying to Ron Paul’s side.”

Rep. Paul, who is currently polling at 20 percent in South Carolina, received the coveted endorsement of South Carolina State Sen. Tom Davis Sunday, Davis calling Paul “a Tea Party of one against a towering wave of red ink.”

At a Myrtle Beach press conference Sunday, Davis added, “There’s only one person speaking to what I believe is the core problem of our country today. The biggest threat to our liberty comes from debt.”

Joining Davis, three additional South Carolina state senators – Sen. Lee Bright (Spartanburg), Sen. Kevin Bryant (Spartanburg) and Sen. Danny Verdin (Greenville) – endorsed Rep. Paul Tuesday.

Reinforcing what is shaping up as a two-man race, Paul and Romney are the only Republican candidates who have successfully secured positions on the primary ballots of every state, reported South Carolina’s The State newspaper last week.  A CNN/ORC International Poll released Monday also revealed that Paul and Romney are the only Republican contenders tied with Barack Obama in a likely general election matchup.

Revolution PAC is supporting U.S. Rep. Ron Paul’s campaign for the Republican nomination and consistent, constitutional message with targeted TV advertising, direct mail campaigns and innovative Web promotions complemented by billboards and radio ads in key primary states. Unlimited donations by individuals, businesses and organizations are being accepted by Revolution PAC to support that effort.

Ron Paul to Pause from Campaigning in South Carolina for Debt-Ceiling Vote

Shields taxpayers and future generations from costly Washington enlargement, irresponsibility

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul will pause from his active South Carolina campaign schedule to return to Washington for a vote denying President Obama’s request for a debt-ceiling increase.  The 12-term Congressman from Texas will travel to the nation’s capital tomorrow, Wednesday, and return early Thursday morning for the final three days of campaigning.

On January 12th, Obama announced his intention to exercise early an option to increase the debt-limit, and to do so in the amount of $1.2 trillion.  His option to do so was created under a 2011 budget agreement that created a near-automatic debt-increase mechanism, the use of a disastrous unconstitutional “Super Committee,” and other means of helping Congress shirk their core mission of managing the federal government’s purse-strings.

Tomorrow, House Republicans, Blue Dog Democrats, and other budget hawks have an opportunity to voice their displeasure at the spendthrift habits of the administration and those of their peers in a resolution refusing to grant Obama the right to exercise his option.  The vote, then, separates the true budget hawks from the tax-hikers and the borrowers, and helps frame the debate by forcing the Democrat-controlled Senate to support Obama – or compelling Obama to step way out in front and demand a credit card increase of $1.2 trillion in taxpayer money at a time when the national debt surpasses national GDP.

Paul’s campaigning in the Palmetto State has been vigorous, with speeches to the South Carolina Tea Party Convention and the Faith & Freedom Coalition Presidential Kick-Off, and participation in last night’s Fox News presidential debate.  Today Paul also is holding town hall meetings in Spartanburg and Rock Hill.

Paul’s campaigning was also fruitful.  On Sunday he picked up the consequential endorsement of state Sen. Tom Davis (R-Beaufort), who earlier today joined Paul for a press conference at the South Carolina State House where Paul picked up additional key endorsements from state Sens. Lee Bright (R-Spartanburg), Kevin Bryant (R-Spartanburg), and Danny Verdin (Greenville).

“The issue of debt and spending are uniting Republicans and independent voters to stand up and say ‘enough.’  The Washington establishment has for far too long gambled away Americans’ hard-earned wages while going so far as to present the children and grandchildren of workers with a dim future saddled with debt,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

“Ron Paul is taking real action to stop the debt wherever he can while his rivals for the Republican nomination pay only lip service.  Tomorrow’s vote will divide leaders into two starkly different camps: the tax-and-spend establishment, and the true reformers who want to roll back decades of government enlargement, overreach, and irresponsibility.  Voters this election cycle, we trust, are savvy and can distinguish between smooth-talking politicians and the one candidate of authentic change, Ron Paul,” added Mr. Benton.

In addition to his South Carolina campaign successes, Ron Paul released his new ad ‘Three of a Kind’ concerning the serial hypocrisy, counterfeit conservatism, and flip-flopping of his rivals Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Mitt Romney respectively.

VIDEO: Senator Tom Davis Endorses Ron Paul

Senator Tom Davis of South Carolina has just endorsed Ron Paul for President of the United States. Senator Davis cites Paul’s consistent record of fiscal conservatism writing in the official press release “I’m endorsing Ron Paul because enough is enough. Despite this wave of unprecedented government spending, our unemployment rate has remained above 8 percent for the last 34 months and 146.4 million Americans – one out of every two people in this country – are now classified as poor or low-income…Ron Paul’s record matches his rhetoric, his fiscal plan matches the fiscal challenges that our nation is facing and his movement represents the taxpayers whose interests have been ignored in the political process for far too long.”

Senator Davis also highlights that, despite naysayers, Ron Paul has the best chance of beating President Obama in the general election saying “he is the candidate who gives the Republican Party the best chance to beat Barack Obama in November.” This endorsement comes the night before the next Republican Debate and hopefully will give Paul a further boost as a new Reuters/Ipsos shows Paul tied for second in South Carolina.

Ron Paul Receives Pivotal Endorsement of South Carolina State Senator Tom Davis

Palmetto State Tea Party favorite and GOP heavyweight goes all in for Ron Paul

COLUMBIA, SC – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul received today the key endorsement of tea party favorite and South Carolina political heavyweight, state Sen. Tom Davis (R-Beaufort).

The consequential endorsement took place at a press conference at 6:00 p.m. EST at the Palisades Conference Center, located in Myrtle Beach.

Sen. Davis is the most influential fiscal conservative in the South Carolina General Assembly and his endorsement virtually assures that fiscal conservatives in the “First in the South” primary state will take notice.  His endorsement also is viewed as a political game-changer by many in South Carolina Republican Party circles.

Those outside South Carolina also have stated the importance of the Davis endorsement.

One of Paul’s rivals for the Republican nomination, Rick Santorum, recently spoke on the weight a Davis endorsement carries.  Ruminating on the prospect Davis might endorse him the former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania told The Hilton Head Island Packet newspaper that, “To get an endorsement from someone like Tom Davis is a big deal.  It would speak volumes to folks and make them take notice and give us a look.”

Sen. Davis, as it turned out, took a far different path and instead endorsed a fellow fiscal conservative.

“We’re excited and grateful to have Sen. Davis’s endorsement, as it carries tremendous weight in South Carolina,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.  “Sen. Davis knows a true fiscal conservative when he sees one.  He’s uniquely qualified to distinguish between establishment candidate Mitt Romney and the conservative alternative to Romney, Ron Paul.”

Sen. Davis’s full statement of endorsement follows.

Statement from Sen. Tom Davis

“It’s easy to campaign on lower taxes, less spending and fewer regulations – it’s another thing entirely to stand up for these limited government principles when the entire Washington establishment is aligned against you.  Yet for more than three decades Ron Paul has cast thousands of lonely votes in our nation’s capital based on the constitutional principles that this country was founded on – and that the Republican Party has promised to protect.  Yet while generations of politicians – including far too many Republicans – were losing their way or caving to the status quo, Ron Paul was standing as a Tea Party of one against a towering wave of red ink.

“2012 marks the fifth consecutive year in which the federal government is going to spend well over $1 trillion in money it doesn’t have.  Each and every American taxpayer is now on the hook for $135,000 worth of federal debt – and last year’s debt deal adds another $7 trillion in deficit spending over the coming decade.  Meanwhile the U.S. Senate hasn’t passed a budget in nearly 1,000 days.

“I’m endorsing Ron Paul because enough is enough.  Despite this wave of unprecedented government spending, our unemployment rate has remained above 8 percent for the last 34 months and 146.4 million Americans – one out of every two people in this country – are now classified as poor or low-income.

“Government activism and government intervention clearly hasn’t fixed our economy – which is why the Republican Party needs a nominee who isn’t wedded to that failed approach.  We won’t chart a path to fiscal solvency or victory in November by running toward the failed ideas of the left – we will achieve those victories by returning to the principles that the Republican Party once stood for.

“That is why I am proud to endorse Ron Paul for president.

“Ron Paul’s record matches his rhetoric, his fiscal plan matches the fiscal challenges that our nation is facing and his movement represents the taxpayers whose interests have been ignored in the political process for far too long.

“I’m also endorsing him because unlike what the pundits have led you to believe, he is the candidate who gives the Republican Party the best chance to beat Barack Obama in November.

“We have a choice: We can keep electing candidates who talk about change only during political campaigns as a way to get elected, or we can finally elect a candidate who will walk the walk and make that change a reality – restoring our bottom line, our individual liberties and our national pride in the process.”

Sen. DeMint: “I’d like to see a Republican Party that embraces libertarian ideas.”

Writes Peter Grier at the Christian Science Monitor:

Ron Paul did pretty well in the New Hampshire primary Tuesday. He placed second, slightly outperforming pre-election polls, and – perhaps more importantly – he tripled the number of votes he got in the Granite State when he ran for president in 2008. More and more, many in the GOP are realizing that this time around Ron Paul is a significant phenomenon that’s not going to fade away once the early primaries are over.

They’re also realizing that it’s counterproductive to dismiss the Texas libertarian’s followers as cranks, college students in favor of drug legalization, or disaffected liberals. The 2012 general election is likely to be close, and the GOP will need all the voters it can get.

Thus some in the GOP are beginning to make conciliatory noises about the Paulites. Tea party favorite Sen. Jim DeMint (R) of South Carolina on Wednesday said that the Republican presidential candidates need to listen to Ron Paul and might do well to adopt some of his ideas, particularly on economics.

“One of the things that’s hurt the so-called conservative alternative [candidates] is saying negative things about Ron Paul,” said Senator DeMint on conservative Laura Ingraham’s radio show. “I’d like to see a Republican Party that embraces a lot of the libertarian ideas.”

Ron Paul Celebrates Historic Second Place Win in New Hampshire Primary

“We urge Ron Paul’s opponents who have been unsuccessfully trying to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney to unite by getting out of the race and uniting behind Paul’s candidacy.”

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – Ron Paul tonight scored an historic second-place victory in the 2012 New Hampshire Primary.  Below please find comments from National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton:
“Ron Paul tonight had an incredibly strong second-place finish in New Hampshire and has stunned the national media and political establishment.
“When added to Paul’s top-tier showing in Iowa, it’s clear he is the sole Republican candidate who can take on and defeat both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama.
“The race is becoming more clearly a two-man race between establishment candidate Mitt Romney and Ron Paul, the candidate of authentic change.  That means there is only one true conservative choice.
“Ron Paul has won more votes in Iowa and New Hampshire than any candidate but Mitt Romney.
“Ron Paul and Mitt Romney have been shown in national polls to be the only two candidates who can defeat Barack Obama.
“And Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are the only two candidates who can run a full, national campaign, competing in state after state over the coming weeks and months.   Ron Paul’s fundraising numbers — over $13 million this quarter — also prove he will be able to compete with Mitt Romney.  No other candidate can do all of these things.
“Ron Paul is clearly the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney as the campaign goes forward.
“We urge Ron Paul’s opponents who have been unsuccessfully trying to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney to unite by getting out of the race and uniting behind Paul’s candidacy.
“Ron Paul has the boldest plan to cut spending, a dedication to protecting life, and a lifelong dedication to the Constitution and limited government.  He also has the necessary support to campaign nationwide against Mitt Romney.
“Our campaign is already planning ahead for South Carolina, Florida, and beyond.  Soon Ron Paul will head to South Carolina to begin a feverish round of campaigning.
“Ron Paul is in this race for the long haul.  And he is ready to fight.

“See you on the campaign trail.”

Delegates for Dr. Paul are stepping up in Iowa and across the nation. Americans are again craving freedom and the lasting prosperity that it brings!

Our creative team’s latest video, “The Compassion of Dr. Paul”, has gone viral, logging nearly a half-million views in one week’s time and earning NBC Nightly News coverage.

Now through its January 10 primary, your donations are funding a six-figure ad buy in New Hampshire featuring a broadcast version of “Compassion”. A total of 189 ad spots will run on CNN, FOX, MSNBC, Discovery and History Channels, including three airings during Saturday’s upcoming ABC News/WMUR Debate. VIDEO: ‘Betrayal’ Ad Aimed at Rick Santorum

Hard-hitting television, Internet ad argues that Washington insider Rick is an untrustworthy serial hypocrite on spending and right to work

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign announced today its new ad ‘Betrayal’ aimed at Rick Santorum.

The ad will begin airing on Monday, January 9th on television in the key early voting state of South Carolina.  In addition, the campaign has arranged for internet promotion on websites where conservatives congregate.

‘Betrayal’ exposes Rick Santorum as another serial hypocrite in the vein of Newt Gingrich, showcasing the former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania’s record of duplicity on issues such as spending – including raising the debt ceiling – and insider lobbying.  The ad also features Santorum’s appalling record on right to work, an issue dear to South Carolina residents but one of pivotal importance right now due to the NLRB-Boeing dispute.  The ad also includes Rick Santorum’s now-infamous confession that he is, in his own words, “no longer a deficit hawk.”

“Ron Paul can come to South Carolina with a clear conscience and an impeccable record on the issues important to voters there: fiscal restraint, right to work, and strict adherence to the Constitution and one’s own promises.  In addition, Dr. Paul has support from many of our armed services men and women,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

“This ad showcases the real Rick Santorum and it’s the reason why Santorum should be leery of competing in the ‘First in the South’ Republican primary, and it is why we hope for a strong, competitive showing in the Palmetto State,” added Mr. Benton.

Eyewitness Report: South Carolina's Secession

Frederick Douglass

This is one in a series of articles being featured on the Political Spectrum as part of Secession Week.

The cowardly and disgraceful reaction from a courageous and manly assertion of right principles, as described in the foregoing pages, continued surprisingly long after secession and war were commenced. The patience and forbearance of the loyal people of the North were amazing. Speaking of this feature of the situation in Corinthian Hall, Rochester, at the time, I said:

"We (the people of the North) are a charitable people, and, in the excess of this feeling, we were disposed to put the very best construction upon the strange behavior of our southern brethren. We hoped that all would yet go well. We thought that South Carolina might secede. It was entirely like her to do so. she had talked extravagantly about going out of the Union, and it was natural that she should do something extravagant and startling, if for nothing else, to make a show of consistency. Georgia, too, we thought might possibly secede. But, strangely enough, we thought and felt quite sure that these twin rebellious States would stand alone and unsupported in their infamy and their impotency, that they would soon tire of their isolation, repent of their folly, and come back to their places in the Union. Traitors withdrew from the Cabinet, from the House of Representatives, and from the Senate, and hastened to their several States to 'fire the Southern heart,' and to fan the hot flames of treason at home. Still we doubted if anything serious would come of it. We treated it as a bubble on the wave--a nine-days' wonder. Calm and thoughtful men ourselves, we relied upon the sober second thought of the southern people. Even the capture of a fort, a shot at one of our ships--an insult to the national flag--caused only a momentary feeling of indignation and resentment. We could not but believe that there existed at the South a latent and powerful Union sentiment which would assert itself at last. Though loyal soldiers had been fired upon in the streets of Baltimore, though loyal blood had stained the pavements of that beautiful city, and the national government was warned to send no troops through Baltimore to the defense of the National Capital, we could not be made to believe that the border States would plunge madly into the bloody vortex of rebellion.

"But this confidence, patience, and forbearance could not last forever. These blissful illusions of hope were, in a measure, dispelled when the batteries of Charleston harbor were opened upon the starving garrison at Fort Sumter. For the moment the northern lamb was transformed into a lion, and his roar was terrible. But he only showed his teeth, and clearly had no wish to use them. We preferred to fight with dollars, and not daggers. 'The fewer battles the better,' was the hopeful motto at Washington. 'Peace in sixty days' was held out by the astute Secretary of State. In fact, there was at the North no disposition to fight, no spirit of hate, no comprehension of the stupendous character and dimensions of the rebellion, and no proper appreciation of its inherent wickedness. Treason had shot its poisonous roots deeper and had spread its death-dealing branches further than any northern calculation had covered. Thus, while rebels were waging a barbarous war, marshaling savage Indians to join them in the slaughter, while rifled cannon-balls were battering down the walls of our forts, and the iron-clad hand of monarchical power was being invoked to assist in the destruction of our government and the dismemberment of our country, while a tremendous rebel ram was sinking our fleet and threatening the cities of our coast, we were still dreaming of peace. This infatuation, this blindness to the significance of passing events, can only be accounted for by the rapid passage of these events and by the fact of the habitual leniency and good will cherished by the North towards the South. Our very lack of preparation for the conflict disposes us to look for some other than the way of blood out of the difficulty. Treason had largely infected both army and navy. Floyd had scattered our arms, Cobb had depleted our treasury, and Buchanan had poisoned the political thought of the times by his doctrines of anti-coercion. It was in such a condition of things as this that Abraham Lincoln (compelled from fear of assassination to enter the capital in disguise) was inaugurated and issued his proclamation for the 'repossession of the forts, places, and property which had been seized from the Union,' and his call upon the miltia of the several States to the number of 75,000 men--a paper which showed how little even he comprehended the work then before the loyal nation. It was perhaps better for the country and for mankind that the good man could not know the end from the beginning. Had he foreseen the thousands who must sink into bloody graves, the mountains of debt to be laid on the breast of the nation, the terrible hardships and sufferings involved in the contest, and his own death by an assassin's hand, he too might have adopted the weak sentiment of those who said 'Erring sisters, depart in peace.' "

From the first, I, for one, saw in this war the end of slavery; and truth requires me to say that my interest in the success of the North was largely due to this belief. True it is that this faith was many times shaken by passing events, but never destroyed. When Secretary Seward instructed our ministers to say to the governments to which they were accredited that, "terminate however it might, the status of no class of the people of the United States would be changed by the rebellion--that the slaves would be slaves still, and that the masters would be masters still"--when General McClellan and General Butler warned the slaves in advance that, "if any attempt was made by them to gain their freedom it would be suppressed with an iron hand"--when the government persistently refused to employ colored troops--when the emancipation proclamation of General John C. Fremont, in Missouri, was withdrawn--when slaves were being returned from our lines to their masters--when Union soldiers were stationed about the farm-houses of Virginia to guard and protect the master in holding his slaves--when Union soldiers made themselves more active in kicking colored men out of their camps than in shooting rebels--when even Mr. Lincoln could tell the poor negro that "he was the cause of the war," I still believed, and spoke as I believed, all over the North, that the mission of the war was the liberation of the slave, as well as the salvation of the Union; and hence from the first I reproached the North that they fought the rebels with only one hand, when they might strike effectually with two--that they fought with their soft white hand, while they kept their black iron hand chained and helpless behind them--that they fought the effect, while they protected the cause, and that the Union cause would never prosper till the war assumed an anti-slavery attitude, and the negro was enlisted on the loyal side. In every way possible--in the columns of my paper and on the platform, by letters to friends, at home and abroad, I did all that I could to impress this conviction upon this country. But nations seldom listen to advice from individuals, however reasonable. They are taught less by theories than by facts and events. There was much that could be said against making the war an abolition war--much that seemed wise and patriotic. "Make the war an abolition war," we were told, "and you drive the border States into the rebellion, and thus add power to the enemy and increase the number you will have to meet on the battle-field. You will exasperate and intensify southern feeling, making it more desperate, and put far away the day of peace between the two sections." "Employ the arm of the negro, and the loyal men of the North will throw down their arms and go home." "This is the white man's country and the white man's war." "It would inflict an intolerable wound upon the pride and spirit of white soldiers of the Union to see the negro in the United States uniform. Besides, if you make the negro a soldier, you cannot depend on his courage; a crack of his old master's whip will send him scampering in terror from the field." And so it was that custom, pride, prejudice, and the old-time respect for southern feeling, held back the government from an anti-slavery policy and from arming the negro. Meanwhile the rebellion availed itself of the negro most effectively. He was not only the stomach of the rebellion, by supplying its commissary department, but he built its forts, dug its intrenchments and performed other duties of the camp which left the rebel soldier more free to fight the loyal army than he could otherwise have been. It was the cotton and corn of the negro that made the rebellion sack stand on end and caused a continuance of the war. "Destroy these," was the burden of all my utterances during this part of the struggle, "and you cripple and destroy the rebellion." It is surprising how long and bitterly the government resisted and rejected this view of the situation. The abolition heart of the North ached over the delay, and uttered its bitter complaints, but the administration remained blind and dumb. Bull Run, Ball's Bluff, Big Bethel, Fredericksburg, and the Peninsula disasters were the only teachers whose authority was of sufficient importance to excite the attention or respect of our rulers, and they were even slow in being taught by these. An important point was gained, however, when General B. F. Butler, at Fortress Monroe, announced the policy of treating the slaves as "contrabands," to be made useful to the Union cause, and was sustained therein at Washington, and sentiments of a similar nature were expressed on the floor of Congress by Hon. A. G. Riddle of Ohio. A grand accession was made to this view of the case when Hon. Simon Cameron, then secretary of war, gave it his earnest support, and General David Hunter put the measure into practical operation in South Carolina. General Phelps from Vermont, in command at Carrollton, La., also advocated the same plan, though under discouragements which cost him his command. And many and grievous disasters on flood and field were needed to educate the loyal nation and President Lincoln up to the realization of the necessity, not to say justice, of this position, and many devices, intermediate steps, and make-shifts were suggested to smooth the way to the ultimate policy of freeing the slave, and arming the freedmen.
