ICYMI: Highlights From Press Conference Call With RNC Chairman Priebus & MI GOP Chairman Schostak

By Michael Short

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus:

“The President’s stop today is telling, especially since just days ago the White House and the Democrats in Congress said that they were ready to pivot to jobs. And this is what they’ve been apparently trying to do for two years and haven’t had much luck. But yesterday when the markets dropped 500 points, the only news out of the White House was a campaign lunch, number one; and number two, juicy details about the Obama family vacation.

“When President Obama said he was pivoting to jobs, I think what he really meant that he was focusing on saving his own and today’s visit is case in point of that.  Actions speak louder than words and this president seems to be more concerned about the next campaign event instead of solving the ongoing national economic crisis.

“While Michigan families and businesses tighten their belts and make difficult decisions, the Obama White House refuses to get serious about government over-spending. …

“With the help of Sen. Debbie Stabenow, he passed his failed stimulus, his job-killing healthcare plan, and added trillions to the debt while ignoring warning signs that our nation’s credit rating was in jeopardy. Now we have been saddled with the first downgrade in American history and it happened on Barack Obama and Debbie Stabenow’s watch. …

“Michigan families need a jobs president, not a PR president that is only concerned about his own job. And more than anything, our economy needs a restoration of confidence, which will occur only with concrete action, and not more empty rhetoric and political speeches.

“This unprecedented downgrade is a direct result of President Obama and Debbie Stabenow’s failure to address our nation’s mounting debt …

“President Obama and his extreme policies have been a complete and utter disaster for Michigan and this country …

“Everything this president does is political. He doesn’t wake up in the morning without putting his finger up in the air to figure out what he can do today to be politically smart. He’s the campaigner-in-chief. He’s in love with being the campaigner-in-chief …

“We have a president who continues to offer speeches and anecdotes … He would rather play a game of rope-a-dope with the Republicans and make a cynical political calculation that doing nothing but sounding vaguely good on television is a better calculation for him than actually offering a solution …”

Michigan GOP Chairman Bobby Schostak:

“Passing out government checks written with taxpayer’s money is not the solution that Michigan people are looking for. You think about the stimulus plan …  It was the best he could do, and of course it was a failure in terms of job creation …

“So what’s his next plan? Does he have one? We haven’t heard it other than raising taxes …

“Debbie Stabenow continues to reject anything involving job creation. And where did it lead? To a downgrade …

“We could look to leadership by the Republicans in Lansing. By comparison, Gov. Snyder took over with a $1.5 billion deficit. He balanced the state budget in the first 6 months, made cuts, made adjustments, reducing the size of government, taking on all of the hard issues … They rolled up their sleeves and made the tough decisions.

“The bottom line of the visit to Holland, Michigan today: it’s more failed policies, more bad ideas. We need to be focused on what Michigan families need… and hold this administration accountable at the ballot box next November.”
